Assess Functionalsu and New Right View of the Family Essay
Functionalists believe that the family have specific or traditional functions within the family. One function of the family would be reproduction or having children as this is imperative for the world as they will be the future workforce. For example family businesses will need to pass down the factories/shops to the next generation in the family for the continuing of the ancestors business. Other functions include economic maintenance this is where the family provides necessities for all the family members for example shelter, food and clothing. Another is that the family helps teach children how to socialise with others and also educate them with the correct norms. An important function of the family is that it gives a sense of identity and belonging for example the family allows people to be able to rely on because they are connected through family. Talcott Parsons is one of the key functionalists that strongly argued that the nuclear family fits the needs of the contemporary family and so believes that that extended family, which could involve divorce, will prevent the family from growing and being taken care of. He supported the traditional functions of the family and spoke about how the modern family is changing a lot of the former functions. Parsons identified two remaining functions within the family one being primary socialisation of young which is when the parents raise the children and educate them about the norms and values for example the rights and wrongs so they are able to pass them one. For example in abusive families negative norms are passed on. However how they act in other ways depend on their school life. The other main function is the stabilisations of adult personalities which is where children turn into adults and are forced to ââ¬Ëgrow upââ¬â¢ and get a job and buy a house etc. they are made to take things more seriously in the world so they are able to achieve a sense of belonging on their own and actually have a purpose. Overall Parsonââ¬â¢s view of the family is centred around the middle and upper classes and focuses on the maleââ¬â¢s purpose and ignores the female perspective. This suggests that parsons believes women are happy to be housewives and donââ¬â¢t aspire to be anything else but loyal to their husbands. A few positive functions of the family is that they are much more financially stable as the husband and father have a stable job and are able to earn enough money to support the whole family. The nuclear family also results in a much closer relationship between family members as they are with each other daily and so relationships are created. For example siblings are taught to share with each other and so form a bond of trust with each other. Children in the family are more likely to stay on a positive path if they are in a nuclear family as disruption could cause difficulties with school life and social life. Married parents are seen to be very good role models when they are part of a nuclear family. However a disadvantage of the nuclear family is that functionalist advertises it so it seems to be very isolated and private and therefore they are seen to have a poor social life because they keep to themselves and donââ¬â¢t concern themselves with wider groups of people. The family becomes attached to home leisure with TV the internet and games resulting in them becoming more home-centred. The family makes little contact with neighbours and is very self-contained. The family as a result of being private becomes reliant on support from the welfare state. Alternatively functionalists are said to idealise the family life too much. Therefore ignore the rising divorce rates. They refuse to acknowledge the negatives about the changing family life, and the growing family diversity. Another view would be those functionalists donââ¬â¢t take in account the abuse that can occur within any families. That is a reason as to why the modern family is changing, itââ¬â¢s due to the fact that the laws against domestic violence have become much stricter. This leads to the feminists who argued against this nuclear family as it portrayed women in a way that was very sexist. Ronald Fletcher a British sociologist who agreed with the functionalistââ¬â¢s perspective but argued that modern societies are changing and that there is an increase in modern functions in the family such as regulating sexual behaviour and the increase in parental involvement in their education. Other includes the being responsible in the rearing of children and caring for dependent people whether young or old. All these factors contribute to the changing family life and their morals. More and more people are starting to argue like Fletcher that the nuclear family is the dominant family structure but that its modifying over time for example mothers are now getting jobs as well as husbands so they both support the house hold and arenââ¬â¢t dependent on just one person for the whole family. Charles Murray a social scientist says ââ¬Ëthe traditional family life is under threatââ¬â¢. His main concern was with the welfare benefits that single women were being given. He thought that it was too easy for them to leave the nuclear family and live alone and just depend on benefits. Murray also argues that being or living with a single parent on benefits is giving the wrong role models to children as they are able to see that they can live alone and live off benefits so donââ¬â¢t strive to achieve any goals. There are fewer father figures to show discipline as the mother could lose control so the children go down a path of drug dealing vandalism and crime which gives a very positive look on the new right approach. Halsey and Dennis who agrees with what Murray argues saying that single parenthood and absent fathers is one of the key issues with the decrease in nuclear family lives. Due to the lack of jobs and rise in unemployment men are starting to struggle to maintain their title of bread winners and the industries are changing from heavy workloads so women are more likely to find a job in modern times. As a result men may be reject by the women as they canââ¬â¢t financially depend on them so would rather be given benefits than struggle to keep a roof over them and their childrenââ¬â¢s heads. Halsey debates that being in a one parent family with the factors of unemployment and poverty being high could inevitably lead to crime and vandalism by the younger members of the family. Against a nuclear family with a stable income and stable household would again lead to any crimes and vandalism by the offspring in the family. Abbott and Wallaceââ¬â¢s critically judge the new right about how women are being exploited in the families and how a lot of frustration and unhappiness is able to be experienced by living in this environment. The new right also disagrees to acknowledge the violence that can be cause in a nuclear family life and the abuse a family can actually suffer from being forced to stay and live with them as it isnââ¬â¢t socially acceptable to be a one parent family. Some of the ideas that Abbott and Wallace criticised are that the new right are opposed to having an easy availability to a divorce; this again goes against women having the right to leave a violent family life and actually possibly saving theirs and their childrenââ¬â¢s lives by leaving. Again the new right disagrees with abortions as they say the foetuses have a right to life but Abbott and Wallace criticise this because bringing a baby into the world is a big thing and some people are unable to care for the baby correctly. The new right makes men have a very stressful life as they have a whole family dependent on them as a role model of a breadwinner and the same with women being role models for the girls and showing how much work goes into being involved in a family. Abbott and Wallace favour letting people take control of their own lives by living alone or being involved in a homosexual relationship or even women being the breadwinners while men are in charge of the household and children. Some of the traditional family values that the new right followers agree on bringing back involve that a womanââ¬â¢s place is in the home and shouldnââ¬â¢t be working as a bread winner as thatââ¬â¢s the mans job as head of the household. This is associated with gender patriarchy as women are treated completely different to the way men are, and so itââ¬â¢s seen as unfair and sexist in the modern day. Gender patriarchy would be one of the main factors that feminists would argue about as they say women are oppressed by the nuclear family and its rules and values. Different feminist groups argue about different factors, liberal feminist argue about sex discrimination and want changes in the law to be made. However radical feminists argue against men patriarchy, where men are seen to have more power for example women are considered to be responsible for raising the children and choosing and cooking the food and keeping the home as welcoming as possible. Traditionally a man would never be seen do to the cooking or cleaning as it was seen as a wifeââ¬â¢s job but in modern times itââ¬â¢s a much more equal task. There are however some positive aspects as to why many people agree with the new rights theory as Brigitte Berger, who defends the nuclear family by saying itââ¬â¢s a very positive feature of modern societies as it helps the youth of the world understand decency, common sense, politeness and respect for others. These values and morals will help make a better life for the person as common decency is seen as a norm and many people agree that in a single parent family the mother might find it s a struggle to teach the children all of that on her own due to the lack of help from the father figure.

River running history of the Colorado River Research Paper
River running history of the Colorado River - Research Paper Example This paper explores the history of Colorado River. Colorado River cruises through Grand Canyon where it changes its direction due to the physical features that exist in its course. The depth of canyon along the river varies and the width as a range of 10 to 18 miles. The river has curved through the earth geology for more than 6 million years. The water of the river has won the layers of limestone, granite, sandstone and shale among other layers. Colorado River has two major districts, the lower basin that comprises of Arizona, Nevada and California, and the upper basin that comprises Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Utah. The sources of the river are in Colorado and Wyoming and it flows to the Gulf of California. The river serves as a historic and prehistoric feature in the west. Colorado River that flows through Utah towards southwest direction has two tributaries San Juan and Green. During the prehistoric period, the river served as a boundary to the Anasazi population who lived on the south and eastern part of the river and the Fremont population who lived on the north and the west of the river. History records that river Colorado has been a source of water and livelihood for the natives of the Grand Canyon for over 12,000 years. The natives used the river water for agriculture and domestic use. Communities such as Havasupai, Hualapai, Hopi, Paiute, Yavapai-Apache, Navajo, and Zuni had a great influence in dictating the use of the river water (Marston & Farquhar 102). One third of water allotment right lies on the hands of over 20 Indian tribes who live and control over 717,000 acres land along the river. These tribes are under the burner of Intertribal Council of Arizona. In 1850s and 1860s, Navajo tribe raided other communities who lived along the river. The control and protection of the river was very important for these communities because they performed their

Malnutrition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Malnutrition - Essay Example The study focused primarily on children under the age of five and their caregivers. The sample population consisted of 1978 caregivers and 2201 children. Through a survey consisting of structured questionnaires, the researchers sought the caregiversââ¬â¢ input regarding their feeding practices, and this information, coupled with anthropometric measurements, helped the researchers to deduce the childrenââ¬â¢s overall nutrition and health status. The researchers discovered at least five prominent health-related problems that affected the children. These problems included widespread stunting among the children as a massive proportion of the children were underweight and wasting. Secondly, the researchers discovered that caregivers in the 7 counties breastfed their children for short durations particularly among children below 36 months. Another critical issue discovered in the counties was the lack of exclusivity in breastfeeding children under 6 months. With regard to breastfeedi ng, the researchers further discovered low prevalence of sustained breastfeeding up to the age of one year. Another critical problem was the inadequate delivery of complementary foods to some infants aged between 6 and 8 months. The last major issue discovered through the research was an increased prevalence of stunting among children who had never received breast milk, as well as those who had not been breastfed for at least 1 year. In addition, it was discovered that stunting was quite prevalent among children whose feeding practices comprised primarily of poor quality semi-solid foods (Zhou, Wang, Ye, Zeng & Wang, 2012). Based on these issues and findings, the researchers determined that poor feeding practices such as lack of exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months, provision of complementary foods between 6 and 8 months, or provision of poor quality foods, were the primary causes of malnutrition among most children in the 7 counties of China. The primary themes d iscussed in the article include poverty and ignorance, which detrimentally affect caregiversââ¬â¢ provision of superior quality nutrition to their children, particularly those under the critical age of 5 years. The authors hypothesize that there is a close link between poverty and ignorance on the feeding practices of children, and this subsequently results in malnutrition. As a consequence, Zhou, Wang, Ye, Zeng & Wang (2012) proposed the implementation of additional programs to enhance the level of knowledge on effective feeding practices among caregivers. The researchers further suggested that these programs should be implemented in all remote and impoverished regions of China so as to improve the overall health of children under the age of 5 years. The studyââ¬â¢s main strength lies in its execution. The study comprises of comprehensive sections that examine different aspects that play a part in asserting the studyââ¬â¢s hypothesis. The study, therefore, manages to affir m its hypothesis showing that there is a close link between feeding practices of children below 5 years of age and malnutrition (Zhou, Wang, Ye, Zeng & Wang, 2012). However, the studyââ¬â¢s primary weakness involves the ethical requirement of informed consent for all participants. Although the researchers give details of the number of participants and the form of questioning used to

A Comparative Analysis of the Movie 300 and Herodotuss The Persian Essay
A Comparative Analysis of the Movie 300 and Herodotuss The Persian Wars - Essay Example However, the movie committed major deviations from Herodotusââ¬â¢s historical accounts of the Persian Wars. This paper attempts to discuss the differences between the film 300 and Herodotusââ¬â¢s account of the last stand at Thermopylae in terms of military tactics, naval engagements, and religion. In the movie, the King of Sparta, Leonidas, and his best soldiers confront Xerxesââ¬â¢s enormous army at the northern Greeceââ¬â¢s narrow pass and courageously restrain the Persians. And the age-old motivating importance of sacrifice has been preserved. Hence, for people who think that the merit of a film is established firmly by its episodes, and that the value of its rhythm, visuals, acting, screenplay, and historical accuracy are merely icing in the cake, the 300 will be worth a watch. However, for people who think that rhythm, visuals, acting, screenplay, and historical accuracy represent the true success of film, that a setting is merely the objective, and that the objecti ve should never be confused with the action, the 300 is a quite worthless film. Military Tactics In the film 300 Leonidas is depicted as planning to carry his 300 elite soldiers to Thermopylae to crush the Persian army and stand up for freedom. Leaving behind the unsophisticated principle of justice, rationality, and freedomââ¬âthe Spartans, similar to other Greeks, had a history of trying to subjugate if not really colonize other populations when it served their goalsââ¬âit is nonsensical to propose that an exceptional Spartan commander like Leonidas would think that his elite army of 300 could spoil the ambitious goal of tens of thousands of Persian soldiers. The enthusiasm of Leonidas is not convincing or believable. The real last stand of the 300 as a hold-back strategy is historical and plausible. Some of the depictions of the military strategy are historically inaccurate. For instance, the filmmakers chose to reduce the Spartan body armors to their symbolic and basic a spects: weapons, shields, cloak, and headdress. The outcome is superhuman images, hoplites stripped of body armors. Any Greek fighter would refuse to go to war without some kind of upper body shield. There are other historical inaccuracies. Ephialtes, the Greek who double-crossed the Greek army, is shown as a badly misshapen Spartan recluse whose betrayal stems from the refusal of Leonidas to permit him to take part in the battle. Gorgo, the wife of Leonidas, who was trivially mentioned in the historical accounts, is granted with a very important role. The domestic political schemes in Sparta are entirely fictional. The route at Thermopylae is depicted as an extremely constricted crevice between upright rock faces. The Greek forces are depicted advancing south of Sparta but Thermopylae is located at the northern part of Sparta. Illusory creatures appear every now and then, like the giant elephants and rhinoceros, at the battle. These are imaginary additions. The documentary The Last Stand of the 300 accurately describes the military strategies at Thermopylae. Most of the descriptions are in line with Herodotusââ¬â¢s accounts. The Greek army positioned themselves in a phalanx, a fortification of encrusted spearpoints and

Stage 3 of the Three Stage Integrative Model Assignment
Stage 3 of the Three Stage Integrative Model - Assignment Example I would also evaluate if the client is ready to move on to the third step by considering what or who might prevent him from achieving his goals. This would be both a personal and professional assessment on the part of the client. He would have to think about the people in his life and who among these people would not help him achieve his goals. He would also have to think about his skills, his mental capacity, and his determination and to evaluate if these factors hinder him from achieving his goals (Egan, 1998). After the client has reviewed all these elements, then it is logical to conclude that he is ready to move on the stage 3 of the counselling process. By reviewing the above elements, I am able to gain a sign as to his mental, emotional, and psychological preparedness to meet the challenges of the next stage of the counselling process. The dynamics involved between the counsellor and the client in order to develop programmes which would assist the clients to achieve change includes the adaption of the SMART strategy. The SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic and Time-framed) strategy in conceptualizing programmes help to ensure that the programmes would work well for the clients (Egan, 1998). In this dynamic, the goals set are specific enough and their effectiveness and applicability to the programme would be measurable. It must also be agreeable to the client and the counsellor. The programme is after all for the benefit of the client and it must be something he would be comfortable with. The programme must also be something which would work well for the counsellor because he would help implement it to the client. The programme must also be realistic (Egan, 1998). In this case, the activities and goals set must be achievable and attainable in the long-run. The goals and activities must not be too lofty a nd too ambitious for the

Recycling Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1
Recycling - Research Paper Example s a man makes impact on his personal and family lives at present, and threatens future life of his next generations, who will not be able to live the same life as this man does. To prevent such results, the concept of sustainable development emerged. This concept became popular in the 80-es of 20th century. The main idea of it is that a man should live in such a way, so that he will not prevent his future generations to live at least in the same way, as he does (Bartlett 2012). Some of the principles of sustainable development state, that a man should be careful with using resources, and should not just spend them irretrievably. It became important to find new methods to compensate and displace the used resources to preserve ecological system. The idea to process the waste products and use them as secondary materials became very popular among the supporters of the sustainable development concept. Thus, recycling became one of the instruments for communities how to get to the sustaina ble development path. Recycling is a process of reusing waste products and garbage or retrieving them back into operation. This process is considered to be one of the methods to restore all the waste generated (Tam 2006) The importance of recycling today is significant and is of global value. Recycling helps to solve ecological and resource-saving problems. First of all, the resources on the Earth are limited and cannot be compensated as fast as they are being used (some of them require the time of life of several generations). Then, when waste is thrown into environment, it usually becomes its pollutant. It takes several centuries for some materials to decay in natural environment. Besides, product waste and other products, the useful life of which is over, are usually (but not always) a cheaper source of materials than natural sources. Using secondary material resources can save the costs for waste utilization, new resource purchase, transport and labour costs etc. New jobs for
Information Systems Security and Ethical Issues - Finance Management Assignment
Information Systems Security and Ethical Issues - Finance Management - Assignment Example Computerized information systems are becoming the De facto way to communicate business information, especially financial information. As Whitman and Mattord (2011), say, there are however many security issues which have to be used which range from internal threats, external threats from hackers, etc. Managerial information if more of a product by the financial management department rather than what they collect. This information is derived from raw data from other sources such as POS, Inventory data, etc The sources of financial information can either be primary or secondary. Primary data is the data that derived from direct transactions such as POS data while secondary data is data that has been derived from other sources of data, such as internal financial resources which includes the cash flow statements, the trial balance, the income statement etc. Financial accounting systems and Principles are also useful in avoiding errors. They are designed in such a way that if an error is made, the error is made. However, some errors (such as compensating errors) may not be detected in this way. Timely: information must be timely in order to be of any use, the right information provided at the wrong time is not useful to anyone. For instance, if there is going to be a fall in demand for a specific product, getting this information in time to plan for this change in market is very useful to the business, however, if this information comes at the wrong time, the information will not be of any use to the business and the business will still have to suffer the consequences. Relevant: information has to be relevant to a business and to a specific situation. For instance, information about the fall in market demand for cars may not be relevant for a retail store, unless there is a direct correlation between the two.

Partnership - Assignment Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Partnership - Assignment Paper - Essay Example A partnership is different from a company on the grounds that it is not incorporated and thus cannot be called a separate legal entity. However, a firm may be sued, or sue other partners if it is registered. Every partner is an agent representing the partnership firm and this function begins as soon as the partners agree to form a partnership with each other, irrespective of the fact that they began trading or not. Thus, each partner will be liable to his full extent for the debts of the firm. A partnership agreement arises out of a contract among the various partners which may be either expressed or implied in nature. There are various kinds of partners, dormant and active, in some cases, an individual might hold himself a partner only to the outside world and thus becomes liable for any debts that the firm must manage in due course. Various articles of partnership including a Memorandum of Association, Articles of Association etc must be laid down as part of the contractual agreeme nts which contain relevant information including the names of the partners, extent of capital provided, nature of the firmââ¬â¢s business, the ratio of sharing profits and losses, as well as the regulations for admission and retirement of partners. The main difference between a partnership and a company is that a company is a type of a corporation and is a separate legal entity except for cases where the company has been proved to be illegal in which case the corporate veil may be lifted. However, Limited Liability Partnerships are corporate bodies having a separate legal personality from their members. A partnership is a mere unity of ownership and control and may be dissolved however a company goes on even after the death of the directors. Each partner in a partnership firms has a certain liability to pay the debts because of his position within the firm if he retires, dies, or is a new partner altogether, just as he is equipped to receive the profits too. In a company however, each director or member who has subscribed is entitled to a small dividend as per the subscription. The audits of a partnership are not available for the scrutiny of the rest of the society whereas a companyââ¬â¢s audits and shares are part of the public proceedings as well and thus open to all. When a company is formed as a subsidiary of another company, then the questions are raised whether the company which is the subsidiary of the other company works as an individual entity or on the basis of its parentââ¬â¢s company. In the case of Solomon vs Solomon the question raised was whether a company is an original entity in itself, and the decision mentioned that the company is indeed an individual entity in itself and operates on its own accord. Any company which is formed has the power and the ability to work on its feasibility without the interference from another company. However, nowadays the concept of veil has overshadowed the Solomon case where there is a common understa nding that a subsidiary often is run by its parent company. A partnership can be terminated in many ways. One of the most common ways of terminating the partnership is when the partnership goes bankrupt and

The Present and Future Price of Money Essay Example for Free
The Present and Future Price of Money Essay One of the most important concepts about saving and investing is the time value of money. It can be used to compare investment alternatives and to solve problems involving loans, mortgages, leases, savings, and annuities. This means money paid out or received in the future is not equivalent to money paid out or received today because inflation erodes moneyââ¬â¢s buying power. Basically, the power of time is on a personââ¬â¢s side and the premise that cash in hand today is more valuable than the same amount in the future due to its capability of earning interest. There are three factors affecting how much an investment will grow: time, money, and interest rate. Time Value of Money is a concept that is very important in financial management. It affects business, personal, and government finance (Harvey, 2012) Within this paper we will discuss the definition of Time Value of Money and identifies the importance of financial managers understanding the concept. Time, Money and Interest Rates Time has an important impact on the future value of money. Time is referred to as ââ¬Å"Nâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"number,â⬠and signifies the number of times something happens to your money. The earlier an individual invests, the more time their investment has to compound interest and increase in value. The effects of time on the value of money need to be taken into account when assessing investments. Investments (Money) with interest rates compounding frequently will yield higher returns. The higher the interest rate, the more money an individual will earn. However, and individual must understand an investment with a higher interest rate generally has a greater risk. Risk is the uncertainty the yield on an investment will deviate from what is expected. Generally, having a savings or investment plan with a fixed interest rate guarantees a specific return but can provide a moderateà risk. The last item to take into consideration with interest rates is ensuring the interest rate is h igher than the rate of inflation. Inflation is the steady rise in the general level of prices of a market basket of goods. If the average interest rates rise, the amount a person earns from this type of investment will not increase. Another consideration with interest rates is ensuring the interest rate is higher than the rate of inflation. Need for Financial Managers Anyone who manages finances in a company setting , deals with consumer finance or running their own business is a financial manager and needs to understand the concept of Time Value of Money. A financial managerââ¬â¢s job it to compare the cost and benefits of alternatives that occur at different times. This is done by restating money values through time in Time Value of Money calculations. These calculations estimate what effect time will have on money. For these professionals to make decisions that will assist a client in taking advantages of low interest rates or investing wisely a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Time Value of Money is needed. Understanding this concept allows them to make better decisions. If they donââ¬â¢t understand the concept then they could make an unfavorable decision resulting in loss of money for the client or their business (Time Value of Money, 2013) Future Value and Present Value As an investor, you cannot control the rate of return on an investment. The actual yield is determined by the market as a whole, in the form of people buying and selling the investments at a price that, coupled with the investmentââ¬â¢s payouts, determines the yield. There are two fundamental formulas used to calculate the time value of money; the ââ¬Å"future valueâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"present valueâ⬠formulas. Theyââ¬â¢re basically the same formulas, but rearranged to solve for different values. The future value formula can answer the question, ââ¬Ëhow much money will I have if I invest a certain amount now, at a given rate of returnâ⬠? The formula is FV=PV*(1+R)N, where FV is the future value (how much youââ¬â¢ll have later), PV is the present value (how much youââ¬â¢ll have now), R is the periodic rate of return or theà percentage that your money will grow in each unit period of time. N is the number of unit periods of time in the overall time span. T he following are examples of the calculation of future values: a) Solve for FV $150,537.19 invested for seven years at an interest rate of 5% will yield a future value of $211,820.94. FV = 150,537.19 (1+ .05)7 = 150,537.19 (1.05) 7 = 150,537.19 (1.40710042265625) = $211,820.94 b) Solve for FV $237,891.22 invested for eight years at an interest rate of 3% will yield a future value of $301.353.48. FV = 237,891.22 (1 + .03) 8 = 237,891.22 (1.03) 8 = 237,891.22 (1.266770081387616) = $301,353.48 c) Solve for FV $320,891.12 invested for 10 years at an interest rate of 11% will yield a future value of $911,144.98. FV = 320,891.12 (1 + .11) 10 = 320,891.12(1.11) 10 = 320,891.12 (2.839420986069016) = $911,144.98 d) Solve for FV $520,520.22 invested for 13 years at an interest rate of 13% will yield a future value of $2,549,513.82. FV = 520,520.22 (1 + .13) 13 =à 520,520.22(1.13) 13 = 520,520.22(4.898011103216606) = $2,549,513.82 The present value formula is based on the same fundamental formula, but itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"solvedâ⬠for the PV term and assumes you will know the FV amount. The present value formula can answer the question, ââ¬Ëhow much money would I have to invest now in order to have X dollars at a specific future date?ââ¬â¢. That formula is PV = FV/(1 + R) n where all the terms mean the same thing, except that R in this formula is typically referred to as the ââ¬Å"discounted rateâ⬠, because its purpose is to lower a future amount of money to show what it is worth to you now (McCracken, 2014). The following are examples of the calculation of present value: a) If you receive a dividend of $562,126.17 in 7 years at an interest rate of 5%. You initial investment w ould have been $399,492.57. PV = 562,126.17/(1 + .05) 7 = 562,126.17 / (1.05) 7 = 562,126.17/1.40710042265625 = $299,492.57 b) If you receive a dividend of $225,003.21 in 6 years at an interest rate of 6%. Your initial investment would have been $158,618.38. PV = 225,003.21/(1 + .06) 6 = 225,003.21/(1.06) 6 = 225,003.21/1.418519112256 = $158,618.38 c) If you receive a dividend of $321,567.35 in 5 years at an interest rate of 18%. Your initial investment would have been $140,560.05. PV = 321,567.35/(1 + .18) 5 = $140,560.05/(1.18) 5 = 321,567.35/2.2877577568 = $140,560.05 d) If your receive a dividend of $63,000.05 in 12 years at an interest rate of 5%. Your initial investment would have been $35,080.75. PV = 63,000.05/(1 + .05) 12 = 63,000.05/ (1.05) 12 = 63,000.05/1.795856326022129 = $35,080.79 Annuity An annuity is a series of identical payments occurring at equal time intervals. When the payments appear at the end of each time period, the annuity is said to be an ordinary annuity or an annuity in arrears. Present value calculations allow us to determine the amount of the recurring payments in an ordinary annuity if we know the other components: present value, interest rate, and the length of the annuity. Present value calculations involve the compounding of interest. This means that any interest earned is invested and will earn interest at the same rate as the principal. So, you earn interest on your interest. The compounding of interest can be very significant when the interest rate and the number of years are sizable. The present value of an annuity, represented by a series of equal payments, receipts or rents involve five components: (1) Present Value (2) Amount of each identical cash payments (3) Time between the identical cash payments (4) Number of periods that the payments will occur, length of the annuity and, (5) Interest rate or target rate used for discounting the series of payments. If you have any 4 of the 5 components, you have the information you need to calculate the unknown component. Calculations of Annuity Suppose you are to receive a stream of annual payments of $325,891.12 every year for 12 years starting at the end of this year. The interest rate is 6%. What is the present value of these 12 payments. PVA =PMT [( 1- (1 /(1 + r) n )) /r ] = 325,891.22[(1- (1/(1 + .06) 12))/.06] = 325,891.22[(1- (1/(1 .06) 12))/.06] = 325,891.22[(1 ââ¬â (1/20121964718355))/.06] = 325,891.22[(1-.496969363577001)/.06] = 325,891.22[.503030636422999/.06] = 325,891.22 x 8.383843940383317 = $2,732,221.13 is the present value of the 12 payments. Suppose you are to receive a payment of $437,891.24 at the end of each year for five years. You are depositing these payments in a bank account that pays 15% interest. Given these five payments and this interest rate, how much will be in your bank account in five years? FVA =PMT [((1 + r) n ââ¬â 1) /r] = 437,891.24 [((1 + .15) 5 ââ¬â 1)/.15] = 437,891.24 [((1.15) 5 ââ¬â 1)/.15] = 437,891.24 [(2.0113571875 -1) /.15] = 437,891.24 [1.0113571875/.15] = 437,897.24 x 6.74238125 = $2,952,429.69 will be in your bank account at the end of 5 years. Conclusion Present Value and Future calculations seem to be a simple way to compare money at different periods of time. Utilizing the future value calculation a person is able to determine the estimated future value of investments based on periodic, constant payments and constant interest rate. It ca also be used to calculate the future of loans payments. Time Value Money is a basic tool in finance that is used every day. Utilizing this concept can help individuals and companies weight all the options so the best decision can be made to prosper in the future. Understanding and having the knowledge about saving and investing is very important to our generation, especially with the very bleak look of social security. References Biger, N. (2008). Benefits of a Healthy Body Weight in the Elderly
Benefits of a Healthy Body Weight in the Elderly A Review Of The Benefits Of Nutritional Intervention In Improving Body Weight, BMI, Activities Of Daily Living (ADL), Decrease Functional Limitation and Healthcare Cost Among Elderly. Introduction Malnutrition is a condition in which consumption of insufficient of nutrients that are required by the body to maintain optimal function of the organs and tissues. Secondary to chronic or progressive disease, older people are vulnerable to malnutrition (Klipstein-Grobusch, Reilly, Potter, Edwards, Roberts, 1995; Watson, 1999). So it was believed that as the population of the elderly increases, cases of malnutrition among the elderly will also increase. 5-10% of non- institutionalized elderly are malnourished is shown in epidemiological studies (Posner et al., 1994). Furthermore, studies have shown that 51-61% of nursing home residents are at risk of malnutrition and 12-29% residents are malnourished (Guigoz, 2006; Suominen et al., 2005; Wojszel, 2006). Therefore, it can be concluded that malnutrition affect all the elderly no matter where they stay. The purpose of the review is to determine the effectiveness of nutritional intervention in improving nutritional status among the elder ly and reduce healthcare cost at the same time in order to prevent further increasing of malnutrition among elderly. It is relevant to nursing with the use of nutritional intervention such as oral supplementation because nurses can help the patients to monitor nutritional status and give feedback to the dietician when the patients are not compliance or the supplementations are not suitable for them to consume. Benefits of nutritional intervention Continuous intervention The first study used observational, prospective, longitudinal, cohort study which involved 378 elderly malnourished patients aged over 70 who lived in community, at home or in institutions which selected by general practitioners in France from two groups, group 1 with rare and group 2 with frequent prescription of oral nutritional supplements with contain high energy and protein. The aim of the study is to determine the impact of nutritional support on the cost and related comorbidities among elderly. Each patient was required to complete 12 months follow-up to measure the nutritional status, medical care consumption and identify malnutrition-related comorbidities. Nutritional status was adjusted using a generalized linear modeling approach and medical care costs were adjusted using a propensity score framework. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was significantly better in group 2 than 1from the first evaluation until the end of the study (P Another study was done in Amsterdam to determine the effectiveness of oral supplementation in decreasing functional limitation among malnourished elderly patients in hospital which involved 210 Dutch patients who aged 60 years and above using randomized control trial. Patients in intervention group received standardized nutritional support in hospital and continuing until three months after discharge. Telephone counseling by dietician is done to give advice and stimulate compliance to the proposed nutritional intake every other week after discharge. Patients in control group received the usual care and did not receive post-discharge nutritional support. Cost data were collected from societal perspective and measures using two cost diaries. The degree of difficulties patient experience with 6 activities such as climbing stairs, dress themselves, getting up and sitting down in a chair (score 0-6) measured by Functional Limitation Questionnaire (Kriegsman, Deej, van Eijk, Penninx Boeke , 1997). After three months follow-up, patients in control group had longer mean length of hospital stay and often admitted to other inpatient institutions compared to patients in intervention group. Patients in intervention groups were able to do more physical activities and costs spent were lower than in control group. The probability of the cost-effective for the intervention lies around 0.5 compared with the usual care which was 0.6 at maximum. After oral nutritional support was given, significant improvements in functional limitations was confirmed by the study done by Woo, Ho, Mak, Law, Cheung (1994). Need-based intervention A group of 92 elderly who aged 65 years and above in nursing home at Taiwan participated in a randomized, double blind, controlled trial which included one year follow-up to observe mortality. This study done to examine the effectiveness of need-based strategy in improving the nutritional status among elderly in nursing home. Elderly in intervention group were given routine monitoring and a warm soup which contained nutrient supplement while elderly in control group were given routine care and normal warm soup. The content in the soup and detail about the study was not told to the resident involved. The participantsââ¬â¢ nutritional status was evaluated using MNA and the height, weight, mid-arm circumference, calf circumference, BMI was measured and calculated. The elderly in intervention group who give supplement would be suspended once either one of the ââ¬Å"at riskâ⬠condition was corrected. Over-nutrition can be prevented and saved cost by giving supplements when it is needed. There was significantly improved body weight, BMI, mid-arm circumference, calf circumference and others in intervention group (all p Conclusion From this review, it concluded that nutritional intervention such as oral supplementation is effective in preventing malnutrition among elderly. Oral supplementation can be taken with warm soup that is easily prepared, saved costs and with no associated digestive problems. Even though overall studies used different methods implementing oral supplementations, the results clearly showed that there was improvement in patientsââ¬â¢ body weight, BMI, ADL and nutrition status after nutritional intervention used. It is also effective using oral supplementation with routine screening such as MNA which enables early identification of those who are at risk so that an appropriate intervention can be taken. We as nurses are able to assess the patientsââ¬â¢ nutritional status frequently using MNA by reporting any changes to the dietician and able to administer the oral supplementation ordered for the patients. Limitations for all the studies were small sample sizes used and health condition of the patients participated may change during the study which will cause the ineffective of the oral supplementation. Future research should be done in various hospitals, community hospitals and nursing homes so that results obtained will be more accurate. The study should be done with a longer follow-up to give more opportunities for the patients to improve and a more accurate cost spent can be obtained. A longer follow-up can determine the effectiveness of nutritional intervention on quality of life and physical activities accurately. 1 | Page

The Project plan for new restaurant
The Project plan for new restaurant Because there is small restaurant in The College of North Atlantic Qatar that provides limited services in quantity and quality. Therefore, this marketing research report is prepared in order to find out the possibility of success of the new restaurant that will take place in College next few months. The management decision problem that we need to solve is: Is there a need for a new restaurant in the College of North Atlantic Qatar? What is the possibility of its success? This management decision problem is related with many marketing questions such as: Are students satisfied with the current restaurants services in terms of prices, quality of food, and menu? Is there enough demand on the new restaurant? What type of food and services do students prefer in the new restaurant? What can the new restaurant do to increase demand over its services? This is what we need to know. We can get answers to these questions from students of the College of North Atlantic Qatar. Therefore, we need to develop approach to get information needed. In this project, we are going to make marketing research process step by step. This report is the second step in the project. The main purpose of this part is to tell about the approach of the report. It will exactly tell about primary and secondary information. Information Needs In order to deal with the management decision problem and marketing problem, following is a list of information required to be gathered by the research project. To make it easy, the information needs classified into categories as following: Prices Are students satisfied with the current restaurant services in terms of prices? Do students feel that the current restaurant prices are fair? Do students feel that the current restaurant prices reasonable? What is the limit of prices do students prefer in the new restaurant? Services Are students satisfied with the current restaurant services? What are problems with services of current restaurant? What are services students want to see in the new restaurant? What about quality of food provided at current restaurants? How do students evaluate staff skills at current restaurant? What additional services students want in the new restaurant? Do students look for high or limited service restaurant? Design and dà ©cor Are students satisfied with the current restaurant dà ©cor and design? What are problems with dà ©cor and design of current restaurant? What type of dà ©cor and design students want to see in the new restaurant? What additional dà ©cor students want in the new restaurant? What type of design do students prefer? Do students prefer traditional design? Food and drinks Are students satisfied with the current restaurant beverage? What are problems with menu of current restaurant? What are foods and drinks students want to see in the new restaurant? What type of food and drinks students want to see in the new restaurant? Advertising Are students satisfied with the current restaurant advertising method? What are preferred advertising methods for students? Do students prefer local newspapers or pouches as advertising tool for the new restaurant? Do students visit the website of the College regularly? Do students prefer SMS advertising? Secondary Research Findings A list of appropriate Advertising Media Options There are many advertising media options in order to advertise about the new restaurant. These options include: (Small Business Management, 2009) Newspaper: Almost every home receives a newspaper, either by newsstand or home delivery. Reading the newspaper is a habit for most families. And, there is something for everybody: sports, comics, crosswords, news, classifieds, etc. Magazines: They are usually weekly or monthly publications instead of daily. Advertising messages are more image-oriented and less price-oriented. The quality of the pictures and paper are superior to newsprint. Advertisements involve color more often. Radio: Radio, as a medium, offers a form of entertainment that attracts listeners while they are working, traveling, relaxing or doing almost anything. Radio media advertising is a relatively inexpensive way of reaching people. Television: Television is often called king of the advertising media, since a majority of people spend more hours watching TV per day than any other medium. It combines the use of sight, color, sound and motionand it works. Outdoor Advertising: When people think of Outdoor Advertising, they usually think of the colorful billboards along our streets and highways. Included in the outdoor classification, however, are benches, posters, signs and transit advertising (the advertising on buses, subways, taxicabs and trains) they are all share similar advertising rules and methods. Because there is no one best way to advertise our restaurant, and based on analysis of adverting media options, we decided to use posters and brouchers. There are many other ways to advertise inside the college such as mobile SMS, but we selected these methods as a starter of our advert strategy because it will cost less than the other methods and its really easy and effective way to deliver our message efficiently to the community of CNA-Q. Both will be distributed inside the buildings of the College of North Atlantic. In order to do so, we will first develop the content and design of the brouchers and posters. Then we will review them. After that, we will print about (100) posters and brouchers in different locations in the campus of the College. We will concentrate on the library, cafeteria, entrances, car parking, etc. The cost of preparing posters and brouchers include costs of printing, copying, and distribution. The cost will be about QR 500. Before distribution, we will get admission from the management of the College. Moreover, we will take care that we include information and figures attractive and show respect to Qatari traditions and culture. Population Numbers and Statistics on Consumers The Student Restaurant will operate and take place within the College campus. It will provide services not only to the College students but also the staff and faculty. There are about 2300 students at the College and the staff and faculty are about 568 (The College of North Atlantic Qatar website, 2010). The restaurant customers are: Male and female, Qatari and non-Qatari, with different levels of income, all are students, and there ages are between 19- up. The Student Restaurant will target all the College students regardless of their ages, department, nationality, or gender. The restaurant will also target all staff and faculty at The College of North Atlantic. Kind of business Our business is restaurant. In order to compete and attract customers, other restaurants in Qatar uses different ways such as providing low prices products, promotion, extensive advertising, free delivery, etc. According to one article, in order to attract customers to restaurant it is important to: Market your restaurant in public places: therefore we will market our restaurant in public areas in the College. Offer special deals: we will provide special deals as 5% discount, free coupons, etc. Sponsor different events: we will make communication to sponsor some activities within the College. Customer service: we will provide high quality customer service by high skillful staff (Setup my restaurant, 2010). We learn from previous part that we have specific target customer, and we can provide better services by considering the importance of marketing and customer service. Conclusion The main purpose of this part of the project was to tell about the approach of the marketing research project. Our analysis show that the management decision problem that we need to solve is: is there a need for a new restaurant in the College, and what is the possibility of its success? In order to collect information about student attitudes towards current restaurant services, prices, design, and menu, and in order to measure student attitudes towards the new restaurant, it is recommended to use the survey as a tool to collect information from sample of College of North Atlantic Qatar students.

Macbeth: Pre-determined Destiny Essay -- essays research papers
Macbeth Pre-determined Destiny? Macbeth was a victim of a vicious human flaw. Ambition. It can be great in small dosages, but when one takes what one believes to be ones destiny, as shown in Macbeth, it can be the downfall. Macbeth was a Noble man worthy of Respect, then the prophecies came, and then there was his wife. "Brave and Bold Macbeth (well he deserves that name)" the very words of the king that Macbeth so faithfully served. Never once thinking of murder. But then he receives the Prophecy "Hail Macbeth Thane of Glamis!" "Hail Macbeth Thane of Cawdor!" and "Hail Macbeth king hereafter!". This plants the seed of evil in Macbeth's mind. In fact, one of the first thoughts he has is of Murder. When he returns home, his wife he had already informed; she was sure, that he was "too full of the milk of human kindness" or too feminine to do what was necessary. She convinces him of murder, but Macbeth still is too kind, and tries to pull out, but she simply appeals to his warrior side, and convinces him of it. The three Weird sisters. Instigators, antagonists. Had it not been for them Macbeth may have lived his entire life never even being king. They appear to Macbeth and Banquo. Telling Macbeth, that he shall be king, and telling Banquo, that his heirs shall be kings, but not he. This leads to Macbeth killing Banquo, and trying to kill his son. The witches had not determined Macbeth's fate. But ...

Prejudice in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and To Kill a Mockingbi
Prejudice in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee In the novels ââ¬Å"Pride and Prejudiceâ⬠by Jane Austen and ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠by Harper Lee it is evident that both novels are dominated by prejudice. In both novels there are various themes but both novels mainly centre on prejudice. In ââ¬Å"Pride and Prejudiceâ⬠the prejudices is not that serious. It is mainly about first impressions (the original title of the Book) yet in ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠the prejudice is more serious and is shown in a more sinister way, the theme of prejudice reaches a climax and end in shocking and drastic results. ââ¬Å"Pride and Prejudiceâ⬠was written in 1813. The period of the setting of the novel is 1811-1812. The novel is set in England in various places like London, Kent, Derbyshire and Hertfordshire (home of the Bennet family). Women in regency Britain had far less option than the women of today. Most women did not receive a formal education, women were taught to be useful but not independent, their aim was to become ââ¬Ëaccomplishedââ¬â¢ which meant being proficient In the social graces such as singing, music, drawing, needlework and literature, although the latter did not have the same emphasis. There was constant pressure on women of those times to marry well, to obtain financial security, not just for their selves but also for their immediate family. The position of unmarried women is clearly defined in ââ¬Å"Pride and Prejudiceâ⬠there is no instance where a single woman travelled alone, or was without a chaperone apart from when Elizabeth went to nurse Jane. Even then this incident was looked down upon by Miss Bingley, however it won Elizabeth respect in the eyes of Mr Darcy. When Lydia r... ... forced her to, but also because she received regular beatings from Bob which psychologically left an impact on her and made her feel someone had to pay and that person was Tom Robinson. So Bob Ewells prejudice was to such an extent that he caused an innocent man to die, therefore along with most of Maycomb County he has Tom Robinsonââ¬â¢s blood on his hand. Both books contain a considerable amount of prejudice, however the prejudice in ââ¬Å"Pride and Prejudiceâ⬠is quite irrelevant while in ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠it is quite substantial. Jane Austen has shown prejudice in a satirical manner while in to Harper Lee has shown its evil form. ââ¬Å"Pride and ââ¬Å"Prejudiceâ⬠is about trivial themes like marriage, love and family life while in ââ¬Å"To Kill a mockingbirdâ⬠it is about evil, racial prejudice and discrimination which eventually grasps the life of a innocent man.
media Essay -- essays research papers
Media Manipulation There is a very subtle, yet powerful force at work on our world today. It is trying to control what woman and young girls do say and believe, especially about their own appearances. The media portrays unrealistic images that affect the way people, particularly woman, feel about themselves. And there is no way to avoid it. The media acts as a transmitter of potentially dangerous, socially desirable values and norms. Anyone can become a victim without even realizing it. Woman are told to believe distortions, inaccuracies, and bias on a daily basis. Somehow in that all the madness thinness has become synonymous with attractiveness. It is the media's job to surround us with slogans and pictures that are able to etch themselves into brains. (Stevens 44) Television, movies, magazine ads, commercials and billboards all attribute to the growing influence the media has on women. (www.rethinkingschools.org). Young girls are the most influenced by the media and its manipulation.(www.ed.gov .ERIC...). However, society as well as the media, has put forth dangerous and concentrated images, that have a strong impact on the lives of woman of all ages. Society has always placed a great emphasis upon the importance of a woman's appearance, and through that emphasis woman have been taught to measure their self worth in terms of the image they present, even more so than their own intelligence. They have been given rigid and challenging standards to live up to, standards that are usually unrealistic, unattainable, and disheartening. Many woman spend the majority of their lives suffering just trying to reach these standards. The ideal body image in this country today seems to be the long haired 5' 7", 110 lb. female found in every fashion magazine and television show. However, many woman at Johns II 5' 7" could starve themselves their entire life and never reach the so called "ideal".( Rushkoff 27). The persuasive and intrusive ... ... dangerous role model, that may even defy their biology, and when this societal and media pressure leads to severe eating disorders among women who believe that they cannot otherwise attain this perceived "ideal" state. The media plays a major role in setting the standard as to what "beauty" is, as the About.com site notes, in finding that, "the average person sees between 400 and 600 ads per day -that is 40 million to 50 million by the time she is 60 years old. One of every 11 commercials has a direct message about beauty." There is abundant evidence that by communicating unhealthy or infeasible goals for appearance, the media can directly cause an increase in eating disorders among women. A Hofstra University research group reported that: "A study examined over 4,000 TV ads. On the average, 1 out of every 3.8 ads had an "attractive-based" message. (www.cdc.gov.nccaphp/teen.html). These results were used to estimate that women are exposed to over 5,000 of these ads a year, (www.cdc.gov.nccaphp/teen.html) and each one adds to women's body dissatisfaction and the desire to be thin and "beautiful."

Cashier Training manual Essay
Addictions Do addictions really exist? People constantly seem to say that they are addicted to nicotine, alcohol and drugs, but there are continuous debates whether this is just a necessity or a general want. Most people start using these substances out of depression as they convince themselves that it will make them feel better about themselves and the difficult life their living. However, others begin with these substances due to social surroundings as they feel the need to fit in around the harsh public. This then turns into a habit. There are 3 main types of addictions; psychological, mental and physical. Every case has a different type of addiction and some are overly exaggerated. After doing some research on addictions, I found that the term ââ¬Å"addictionsâ⬠has been proven to exist by many different scientists on quite a few websites. However I believe it does exist but more over it depends on the way each human beings mind works as some people have greater insecurities than others which cause them to feel the need to take such substances and over use them while others are mentally strong and take these substances once in a way for entertainment. Once you start experimenting with your bodies system and allowing these chemicals in, you should be strong in your mind to stop whenever but if youââ¬â¢re weak and allow your mind to take over, this will become an addiction. As proven by science, physical addictions exist. This has been mentioned by scientists on treatment websites, as many addicts have tried to stay clean for days and they experience ââ¬Å"withdrawal symptomsâ⬠which means; ââ¬Å"the person has developed a physical dependence.â⬠Sometimes addicts give up as they find the withdrawal period harder than anything and feel the need to start the usage of drugs again. According to the National Institute of Health; ââ¬Å"the addictââ¬â¢s whole life revolves around the drug whether they are harming themselves severely or notâ⬠. (http://advancedpaintreatment.com/types.asp) There are certain drugs which can be physically addicting to certain human beings; this is has been proven as an addiction to some degree. But can someà drugs and alcohol can be serious addictions? It is always in the mind of the one using these substances as they are mentally insecure and dependable human minds. In the case of ciggerets it is the nicotine in cigarettes causes the addiction. Nowadays the percentage of smokers have increased, people have found more reasons to continue smoking, allowing it to become a mental addiction. People may think it helps them focus or fills them up as this is what they want to believe. However, people who say nicotine is a necessity have it in their minds and cause their body to go through this mind set addiction, due to insecurities or depression. Nicotine brings a general sense of fulfillment to these said to be ââ¬Å"addictsâ⬠. Smokers need to have the will power to let go of nicotine. Due to the weak mentality of human beings, it has been proven that the majority death toll is due to the tobacco in the nicotine. According to the National Institute of Health; ââ¬Å"Tobacco use killed approximately 100 million people during the 20th century and, if current smoking trends continue, the cumulative death toll for this century has been projected to reach 1 billion.â⬠(http://drugabuse.gov/scienceofaddiction/health.html) On the other hand, alcohol damages the brain and the way in which the stimulants in the brain work. Many people end up in rehab as they are ââ¬Å"alcoholicsâ⬠, but then again do those exist? To me alcoholics are just like ââ¬Å"nicotine addictsâ⬠it is set in their minds as it brings a sense of joy and serenity. Many sorts of psychological issues cause this. Some people tend to push themselves to drink every day, as they feel the need for it due to weak minds as they have no control over their actions and give up on themselves, some with no reason at all. Alcoholics think they physically need the alcohol in their systems but truly they are just mentally addicted to it as they lose control over their lifestyle. There are way too many different types of drugs; each one has a different effect but not all of them become physical or mental addictions. Marijuana is a drug and said to be herbal, however it does affect the way in which your mind works and reacts to certain situations, but not for long. It could never be an addiction to any human being, well thatââ¬â¢s how I would see it as it is just a different way of enjoyment for certain people. But this wouldnââ¬â¢t be a necessity to anybody and if theà person calls themselves an addict to this drug it proves that the person cannot accept their life and feels the need for something which cannot be a true addiction. This would be a psychological problem rather than addiction. Then again, drugs such as; heroin, cocaine, prescription medications and chemicals, like LSD, MDMA, Ecstasy , etc. are psychologically addictive and can cause serious damages to the body and brain if over used. Many people find it very easy to fall into an addiction with such drugs as their body becomes weak and they feel emotionally attached to these chemicals as they highly affect the stimulants in your brain. They feel a sense of relaxation which they appreciate and then think they need. When these drugs are excessively used they cause hallucinations which affect the human brain to see what is real and what isnââ¬â¢t, people who are physically addicted to such drugs lose sense in what reality truly is and do not realize that they arenââ¬â¢t sober nor in their senses. I believe this is a true addiction which builds up in fragile minds. There have been many people who have recently started to abuse prescription medications without any illnesses. The national institute of health posted that these medications can be addictive as well as poisonous, ââ¬Å"This has been proven to not only be addictive but also lethal. Commonly abused classes of prescription drugs include painkillers, sedatives, and stimulants.â⬠The certain stimulants in the brains of such people cause them to carry on taking these chemicals into their system; this is more of a psychological addiction which soon leads to a mental addiction. (http://drugabuse.gov/scienceofaddiction/health.html) In conclusion, I find that addictions do exist to an extent. People, who find themselves in the trap of requiring such substances, should try gaining inner self confidence and face reality rather than depend on drugs, alcohol or nicotine to help them through life. However heavy drugs such as heroin, pharmaceuticals, cocaine and chemicals, when used excessively can cause physical addictions, while alcohol and nicotine are moreover mental and psychological addictions in certain cases and for some people these are just socially used and arenââ¬â¢t said to be addictions at all as they can face reality with or without them. Gun Control Persuasive Essay
I. Itââ¬â¢s late at night and youââ¬â¢re in bed. You hear a loud crashing noise coming from another room and it jolts you awake. You hear things being rustled and quiet whispers. You begin to panic and look around for something to protect yourself with. Nothing. Because you live in Ferguson and tried to purchase a gun to protect you from the coming storm of the Grand Jury decision that was to be released but found that the government banned the sale of guns a couple days before. II. [Ferguson Gun Shop video] III. OpinionGun Control is stripping away your right to protect yourself via the 2nd Amendment which states ââ¬Å"a well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.â⬠I believe todays gun control laws are preventing us from doing so in a fashion that adequately protects us from todayââ¬â¢s threats. There is a huge need for the public voice in this issue instead of it being left to our ineffective, corporation bought politicians. Read more: How does federalism protect against tyranny essay Body I. To better understand why the language of the 2nd amendment was used in such a way at to regarding arming individuals and maintaining militias, itââ¬â¢s necessary to understand the history of the people who wrote it. A foundation of political thought during the Revolutionary period was the well justified concern about political corruption and governmental tyranny. The right to bear arms was a potential check against tyranny. According to Sandra Alters in her book Gun Control: Restricting Rights or Protecting People, ââ¬Å"without guns in the hands of the early patriots, the fledgling republic might have quickly turned tyrannical, disarmed the people at will.â⬠II. [Ron Paul video] III. The argument made that gun control prevents violence is not a strong one. Guns donââ¬â¢t kill people: people kill people. Regulations controlling the sale of guns to a person do little to stop a criminal whose intent is to commit a crime. A gun doesnââ¬â¢t make a person kill someone committing aà robbery, their intent does. They could easily substitute the gun for a knife and have the same outcome. Mark Tushnet, a professor at Harvard Law School, is quoted in Sanford Levinsonââ¬â¢s article noting, ââ¬Å"that event like the recent mass murder at Virginia Tech would have immediately generated responses that 1. Effective gun control laws would have prevented the tragedy and 2. That if students or administrators been armed, instead of afflicted with a ââ¬Ëgun freeââ¬â¢ campus (save, of course, criminals), they could have effectively limited the carnage.â⬠(Truth is whether gun control laws were effective here or not, a violent criminal act here was committed. Seems like gun control laws did not prevent it but rather impeded the possibility of the violence being stopped sooner. IV. We are given the right to bear arms so we should be able to adequately arm ourselves in a fashion that best protects us from todayââ¬â¢s modern-day threats. There has already been an attack on U.S. soil lest we forget 9/11. The Boston Marathon bombing, the terrorists running through neighborhoods hiding in perhaps your backyard. The government officials who do not listen to the public voice, militarizing the police force, decides what we can or cannot own. We have seen a lot lately of police brutality, Ferguson MO, and here at home in Cleveland OH, L.A. riots over Rodney King. These examples of civil unrest and governmental backlash are unnerving to me and should be to you. With Uncle Sam flexing its political muscle in Ferguson to disarm the people, is that not a sign of governmental tyranny? De Facto Martial law? How do you protect yourself if in fact one day, and perhaps sooner than you think, there is a new Revolution we face. The government is failing to listen to the people, America is not popular in the world, and there is an underground movement already started against the government. Gun Control is the governmentââ¬â¢s way to hide the dissarment of the American people and cloak it in the name of violence prevention. Donââ¬â¢t believe that your government would ever turn on you? Neither did Japanese Americans the night after Pearl Harbor when they were rounded up and forced into governmental camps. Conclusion. I. I implore you to exercise your 2nd Amendment right and to support organizations like the NRA. Research the politicians you elect and see where they stand on this very important issue. Donââ¬â¢t be blinded by the rhetoric propaganda the government and media spews to the public sheep. One day yourà life, liberties and freedom may very well rely on it, just like it did 300+ years ago. II. [Gun Control shortvid] Works Cited Alters, Sandra M. Gender Barriers in Communication Essay
Managers today have to face unique challenges while trying to manage a very diverse work force, and keeping communication lines clear and understood is one of these challenges. Remember that for any business, effective communication is an integral key to the success of any organization. No matter which way you look at it, communication flow is important at each and every level in order to function with focus, deliberate and accurate objectives, and controlled consistent results. Effective communication ensures that the communication contents are interpreted and understood in the way that it was intended to. Unfortunately there are barriers that have a negative effect on communication, and one of those barriers is called Gender Barriers in Communication. You are probably wondering just how do Gender Barriers affect Communication, and how did this Barrier develop? Well letââ¬â¢s find out. ââ¬Å"D.E. McFarland has defined Communications as the process of meaningful interaction among human beingsâ⬠(Jain, n.d., para. 1). We as humans are dependent on Communication in our everyday lives. To be honest, ââ¬Å"the whole world is reliant on communication to complete even the most basic daily functionsâ⬠(Braedyn, 2010, para. 2). It is the process by which we humans convey our thoughts and ideas verbally, with hope of being perceived and understood in the way the sender meant for it to be understood. With so many methods of communication in our modern day life, we are bombarded with Email, Facebook, Voicemail, memoââ¬â¢s, and phone calls. All of which are forms of communication. Why even the act of rolling your eyes and shrugging fall in as a form of communication. But even with all these forms available at our disposal, miscommunication occurs. ââ¬Å"Gender Barriers are any misunderstanding or confusion in the intended message caused by male and female differences, which results as a communication barrierâ⬠(Braedyn, 2010, para. 4). Communication must be understood by both men and women in order to be effective, and in order to fully understand these differences we need to see just how they began. Gender communication differences begin in early childhood, as soon as a child is pegged as either female or male. Gender starts with the assignment to a sex category on the final basis of what the infants genitalia looks like. This sex category becomes the main defining factor as to how this child will be dressed, named, and spoken to. ââ¬Å"The development of a gendered identity starts from the very moment babies are identified as male or female as they experience societal, familial, and cultural interactionsâ⬠Both males and females are taught different linguistic styles. For instance our childhood is influenced by nursery rhymes that give subtle instruction on how different genders are and should be perceived. ââ¬Å"Snips and snails and puppy dog tails, thatââ¬â¢s what little boys are made of. Sugar and spice and everything nice, thatââ¬â¢s what little girls are madeâ⬠(Rafael, n.d., para. 2). These subtle instructions set the stage, and are just the beginning fo r future gender differences. Zittleman states that ââ¬Å"Gender stereotypes have a history that begins with learned beliefs of femininity and masculinityâ⬠(Zittleman, 2006). Learned beliefs that allow for reinforcing different behavioral types on our children. For example boys are allowed to have rough language, play loudly, and be rambunctious. They are also taught that it is not seen as being manly if you show emotion by crying, this behavior is reinforced by telling them to be tough and suck it up. Girls on the other hand are taught early on to behave like a lady and to use their manners. They are also told to play quietly, and that it is okay to show your feelings and cry. Crying is allowed on the feminine side. These gender differences have helped to create behaviors and patterns. Men usually are factual, direct, and honest, which explains why they only speak about 7000 words a day. Their communication behaviors that men display usually revolve around competition, rank, power, logic, and reason. Men build relationships as projects are being worked on, and they process information internally when working on making decisions. Femaleââ¬â¢s method of communication differs largely from that of males. Women are raised to be of the nurturing persuasion, indirect, and very respectful. They have a bad habit of apologizing excessively, and their style is more of a rapport type of talk, whereas males have a more report type style. Women build relationships in order to accomplish specific projects, they are comfortable in communicating about their feelings, relationships, and personal subjects like their feelings and emotions. No wonder women speak on average about 25000 words a day. Another difference in how men and women communicate is how the information they are receiving is being processed. The female and male brain process information very differently. Men process information on their left side of the brain, whereas women use both left and right hemispheres; men process analytically, and women process abstractly. Now that we fully understand the reasons and the differences behind Gender Communication Barriers, what can we do to bridge the differences and proactively improve communication in everyday life? ââ¬Å"Men and women would need to make themselves fully aware of each otherââ¬â¢s different communication styles, and be open in trying to break any biases or stereotypesâ⬠(Lieberman, n.d., para. 3). In conclusion, even though men and women process information and communicate differently, by working together and understanding each otherââ¬â¢s differences they can begin to bridge the gap. Businesses stand to benefit ââ¬Å"by committing to develop a firm culture that recognizes, embraces, and leverages individual differences, you will experience greater productivity, increased morale, higher recruiting and retention rates, and improved financial performanceâ⬠(American Instritute of CPAââ¬â¢s, 2012, para. 3). Popular resistance SC3037C Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Popular resistance SC3037C - Essay Example Knowing and understanding the relationship between the narratives and the perceptions which some Muslims may hold can certainly help policing protest movements and help in controlling a situation that could spiral out of control. A Muslim empire was more or less firmly established during the lifetime of the founder of the religion, i.e. Muhammad, but the golden age of the empire came a few centuries later when the Muslims had expanded their region and spread their religion from India to Africa and even into Europe as a Spanish Muslim region was formed. In this manner, the Muslims are perhaps unique amongst the major religions of the world since their empire was founded in the name of religion but divided on national lines overtime (Petersen, 2005). Even then, religion remained important and still continues to be so. While many of the narratives today focus on the battles which the Muslims have had with ââ¬Ënon-believersââ¬â¢ in the past, the historic narratives also focus on discovery, learning and being objective in scientific experiments (Rochberg, 1992). Sardar (2004) discusses this very topic and reports that: ââ¬Å"The Koran devotes almost one-third of its contents to singing the praises of scientific knowledge. The first Koranic word revealed to the Prophet Muhammad is: "Read." It is a basic tenet of Muslim belief that the material world is full of signs of God; and these signs can be deciphered only through rational and objective inquiry. ââ¬ËAcquire the knowledge of all thingsââ¬â¢ the Koran advises its readers; ââ¬ËSay: O my Lord! Increase me in knowledgeââ¬â¢ (Sardar, 2004, p. 28)â⬠. From a religion which devotes itself to peace and the search of knowledge, the narratives about Islam today are clearly more focused on the militant aspect of the religion in which victory means the blessings of god while martyrdom means seventy virgins in paradise (Turner, 1999). This changing narrative means that if the story of Islam can be retold and given to the Muslims
Academic freedom Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Academic freedom - Essay Example The problem highlighted by the author here relates to identity, authority and freedom of speech and expression in the world in general. The fact that, nothing in this world is seen in isolation but is relative to other things or dependent on other elements such as culture, religion, geographic similarity, religion, nationality or politics. In light of social sciences and humanities, the author considers race, gender, ethnicity and religion as political factors that hinder learning and knowledge at all levels especially in the academia which is suffering from a lack of academic freedom as the author terms it. He believes that academics forms a basis of what the students would later be like once they leave the academic institute and the social, political and general environment is what defines their future and how they deal with adversities. The realities of social life are bitter but a lot of it can improve if academic culture is transformed. It needs to not teach about a specific dom inant culture and its superiority but it needs to teach people about other cultures and nationalities, about developing tolerance and appreciation for others, about learning what other religions, races and geographically diverse ethnic groups are about. The author argues over the lack of democratic rights, free press and a missing feeling of well-being exists in places like Saudi Arabia, too full of their national pride and religious superiority. In comparison to Arabia, the American academy is seen to be more liberal and diverse, giving the feeling of confidence and freedom to those who belong there. The difference is vast and it is what creates disparities amongst people at a late stage. The argument is in favor of a liberal form of enhanced academic freedom which can help solve problems like national and culturalà intolerance, ethnocentricity and stereotyping.Ã

Pop Culture Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Pop Culture - Research Paper Example The young ones like to connect with the pop music because they believe this is them when they hum along to songs, attend concerts, be a part of the karaoke nights and basically have a good time within the pop domains. The pop culture within music has always been a good subject to comprehend because the pop music is more about loudness and bang-bang than any other thing. They focus less on how things are followed by the book but understand how things are done in a quick and hassle-free way. This is, therefore, some of the best-known reasons why pop music has been able to showcase the young artists, the teenage sensations, and so on and so forth. The pop music and indeed the pop culture does not represent or take into consideration the people from the older age segments or the ones who are facing mid-life issues. Lady Gagaââ¬â¢s influence on the pop music and indeed the generation of present times is something to write home about. She is one pop singer that has touched the zenith of success during her brief pop career. However, she has touched hearts of millions around the globe and has represented the pop culture in a way that has not been known to be linked with others in the pop music industry. Therefore the role of pop music within the popular culture of present times is an acknowledged one and is manifested for a number of different reasons. People have started to think that pop culture will basically put the young ones on the right track, whereby the latter can listen to songs all day long and remain calm all this while. If they indulge in some other activities which are unbecoming of their own selves, then that would not be a pardonable excuse at all. So it is always an appreciable act on the part of the elders in the current times to allow the manifestation of the pop music in its diverse forms. Pop Culture on Television How programming has been affected with television and how the same has been inter-linked with the pop culture is somewhat of an inter esting debate. This is because the pop culture has brought about a number of programming advancements within the realms of this select audience (McNicol, 2009). The young ones now feel that they have a separate and unique identity of their own, which is being represented through the different pop music channels and distinctive programs ââ¬â all of which cater to the needs and requirements of the time. The children and teenagers know that they need to keep a close track of what is happening within the pop culture regimes so that they can come along well with the changing times and be considered hip and happening within their respective social circles. The need is to remain fast track with the amending technological documentations and this has been in the form of immense progress that has come about with the advent of the pop culture. The pop culture on

Organisational Behaviour Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Organisational Behaviour - Essay Example A person would strive to study the environment and recognize his/her position in the organization thereby playing his role precisely and independently. The perceptual nature of individuals enables them to learn and appreciate other people in the workplace (French, 2011). One becomes conversant with his or her area of jurisdiction. The familiarity with the working environment would facilitate the work with no work clash at all. An individual may acquire knowledge and embrace innovativeness at the workplace because every person is accountable for his job. Working alone in an organization, however, encounters diverse setbacks ranging from limited sources ideas; lack of consultation, boredom some. The absenteeism and health issue on an individual may hinder the smooth operation of the organization. In conclusion, people are more creative when they work alone at their respective workplaces because of the personal accountability. Self-actualization and perception make a person perform better at the workplace. It, therefore, is arguable that individualsââ¬â¢ productivity is high when they are alone. The statement is justified by the argument presented in the

Nelson and Mr. Head in 20 years Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Nelson and Mr. Head in 20 years - Essay Example Nelson knows that Mr. Head is really old now and he doesnââ¬â¢t want him to leave this world without seeing other continents. Nelson knew that Mr. Head is old and old people create very strong associations with objects and surroundings. However, he was determined to show him Africa, the way he showed him the city and the Artificial Nigger. Nelson owns a clothing store near his house and is in good business, owns a fat bank account and has contacts that can safely ship them to Africa. The only problem is Mr. Headââ¬â¢s stubbornness. But Nelson is also the grandson of the same stubborn man. He is determined to drag him to another continent and show him around. One fine Tuesday morning, Mr. Head is up earlier than usual and decides to go for a little walk around his house. He grabs his stick, puts on his slippers glances over to Nelsonââ¬â¢s room where heââ¬â¢s sound asleep and walks out the door. Itââ¬â¢s winters and the morning breeze is chilling. Mr. Head buttons up his shirt to the neck and wraps his free arm around him in an unsuccessful attempt to cover him from the wind. He turns around and takes a look back at his house which is 20 odd yards away from him now and in a moment of perplexity decides to continue his morning walk. All the time he suppresses the voice in his head that it is a bad idea to leave the house in such a cold weather, but there is strange spirit within him that is pulling him forward. Maybe he wants to prove to himself that he is still a man and can take care of himself. He doesnââ¬â¢t want Nelson to escort him to the bathroom, to the breakfast table or to tie his shoelaces. He is feeling tired now, and very cold. His determination is giving up. He is trembling now as he frequently wipes of the mist from his glass with the sleeve of his sweater. Mr. Head is panting and the walking stick is wildly shaking now and he realizes his mistake of leaving home. He shouldnââ¬â¢t have left the house in
